The works of a master of graphic expressions are rightfully installed at the Musée Réattu for this year’s Rencontres d’Arles.
In this setting with such a special atmosphere, on the banks of the Rhône, a sincere union was manifested to exalt the diverse works of this jack of all trades by Alfred Latour. This twentieth century author has always personally withdrawn to better promote his work and his very varied creations. Curious about representative technologies (engravings, bindings, drawings, watercolors, paintings, photographs, etc.) ancient and modern, this attentive and discreet observer appears as an essential marker of his time. A discreet life that he fulfilled so well.
The exhibition is a real success, with a serene co-production if the result is anything to go by. The Lyon Fabric Museum (in total transformation over several years), the Réattu Museum in Arles (in full affirmation of its essential role) and the Alfred Latour Foundation in Lausanne (sanctuary for the preservation of works throughout the World) are united. The three directors presented to us, through just a few well-chosen works which are placed in parallel, the role of the creator Alfred Latour.
To return to the photographic part itself which accompanies the various forms of expression of this graphic designer. We discover that this photography enthusiast, who became a professional photographer, followed the evolution of this medium like most of his colleagues at that time. One or two photographs emerge from a creative process, from a technical path, to take us elsewhere. A look back at a previous vision of his journey. It’s a completely different message that comes across: hesitation, modesty, doubt. The image is intended in its technique, in its concept, to force sharing. Alfred Latour’s photographs are divided, like the rest of his work, on one side between fabrics for Bianchini-Férier or advertising for Nicolas wines and on the other side the watercolors of Eygualières.
Until the end of September 2024, stop by the Réattu Museum to breathe in the endearing collaboration of Aziza Gril-Mariotte, director of the Fabric Museum and Daniel Rouvier, director of the Réattu Museum, the expert curators of this exhibition. The scenography was designed by Pierre Starobinski, a fine connoisseur of the artist and director of the Alfred Latour Foundation.
