Netflix Nonfiction Producing Fellowship Launches With Blackhouse

Netflix is turning its inclusion efforts to producing in the unscripted space.

The streamer has partnered with The Blackhouse Foundation to launch the Netflix Nonfiction Producing Fellowship, a yearlong program that will give five participants direct experience on a Netflix Nonfiction production, which includes unscripted series, documentaries and sports.

“For over 17 years, our mission has evolved to focus on building connection, capacity and coalition for the Black media ecosystem,” Blackhouse Foundation executive director Jenean Glover said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to work with Netflix to identify talent for their nonfiction films and series and are confident this opportunity will lend to new rewarding career paths.”

The fellows – who must be passionate about producing stories from underrepresented perspectives – will also receive mentorship and training via masterclasses, one-on-one coaching from creative executives and meet-and-greets with industry leaders.

Applications open today and are available at the Fellowship’s website.

“We’re excited to partner with The Blackhouse Foundation on a program dedicated to elevating and advancing new voices in the industry,” Netflix director of creative talent development Tiffany Burrell said in a statement. “Now in our third year, the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity invests in organizations and crafts programs that broaden the diversity of storytelling within entertainment. The Blackhouse Foundation shares our commitment to expand opportunities for emerging creators, and we look forward to collaborating on this important initiative.”

This nonfiction producers program is the latest initiative supported by the creative equity fund, Netflix’s five-year, $100 million commitment to invest in underrepresented entertainment professionals that it unveiled in 2021. Earlier this week, the Transgender Film Center announced that it is using the fund to fuel its inaugural Career Development Lab.
