Wolverine Embraces His Animal Side in All-New Marvel Series

Marvel’s “From the Ashes” relaunch of its X-Men line of comic books in the wake of the end of the Krakoan Age continues with a relaunch of Wolverine’s solo series by writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Martin Cóccolo. The new series will feature a new take on the iconic Marvel superhero, as Wolverine will embrace his animal side in a bold new way.

This series comes at a major historic moment for Wolverine, as he is celebrating his 50th anniversary as a comic book character this year, but he is also hot off of the red-hot epic event, The Sabretooth War, which saw Wolverine and Sabretooth’s longtime rivalry reach new heights of depravity.

Marvel Comics teases the release of two new series set within the X-Men’s upcoming From the Ashes era, starring X-Factor and Wolverine respectively.

What is this new Wolverine series about?

As noted, the events of The Sabretooth War, and the loss of the Krakoan Age (which saw Orchis turn the world against mutants in a major way), have both affected Wolverine in a major way, and he has decided to retreat from both mutantkind and humanity and just live in the Canadian wilderness with a pack of wolves.

However, since we know that Wolverine is a part of Rogue’s team in Gail Simone and David Marquez’s Uncanny X-Men series, he obviously will be lured back into the superhero world. His longtime teammate, Nightcrawler, will be the one to pick Wolverine out of the ashes, as it were, and bring Logan back, just in time to face a mysterious new villain.

What do Saladin Ahmed and Martin Coccollo have to say about this new Wolverine project?

Ahmed, who is currently writing a hit run on Daredevil, explained what his plans are for the series, “Logan is simultaneously a mythic hero, an abused animal, and a man of flesh, blood, and adamantium. Our story is about what happens when these parts of him all pull in opposite directions – and threaten to rip Logan to pieces that won’t come back together again.”

Cóccolo, hot off an amazing stint on Immortal Thor, added, “I could talk for hours about why I decided to take this relaunch, but you want my real answer? It’s Wolverine. That’s it. It’s a dream come true for me, and I can’t believe I get to tell my younger self every day that I’m drawing WOLVERINE. Saladin’s exploration of the character and the story is incredibly exciting as a concept as well as visually engaging, and I can’t wait for people to finally see it!”

Wolverine #1 is set to be released on September 11th.
